Impact of mathematics on technology from different periods

Throughout times mathematics science immensely has evolved and has been more dependent from technology as time passes. In the beginning, mankind did not depend as much from technology as it depends today and the use of mathematics on technology was almost nonexistent. The most ancient mathematical texts available are Plimpton 322 (Babylonian mathematics 1900 BC), the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics c. 2000-1800 BC) and the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics c. 1890 BC). All of these texts concern the so-called Pythagorean theorem, which seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry. During those times, mathematicians used what they had at hand, paper, and pencils as their only instruments of work to prove theories. The first sign of the upcoming symbiotic relationship between technology and mathematics came with the invention and use of the abacus, invented by the Chinese. Time passed and mathematicians focus was more in finding ways to prove new theories or to find new discoveries.

Renaissance mathematics

In the 12th century, European scholars traveled to Spain and Sicily seeking scientific Arabic texts, including al-Khwārizmī's. The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, translated into Latin by Robert of Chester, and the complete text of Euclid's Elements, translated in various versions by Adelard of Bath, Herman of Carinthia, and Gerard of Cremona.

Modern mathematics - 19th century

This century saw the development of the two forms of non-Euclidean geometry, where the parallel postulate of Euclidean geometry no longer holds. The implementation of technological tools in this century was still very shy. It was not until the 20th century that Mathematics and technology closed their gap.

20th Century

The 20th century saw mathematics become a major profession. Every year,...
