Concord Bookshop Paper: Organizational Change Process

The business arena is passing through major changes around the world. Organizational change has many concepts ranges from wide changes to small changes that can affect a company. According to Spector (2010), it is important to understand, analyze the dynamic of change, and requirements of effective change implementation. In this paper the author included meaning of organizational changes, tales of Woe at Concord Bookstore, phases in organizational change and the organizational change process that were not completed or implemented at the Concord Bookshop that lead to change failure .

Meaning of Organizational Change

Organizational change is the introduction of a new enterprise resource planning system in order to coordinate and standardize internal processes (Spector, 2010).

Tales of Woe at Concord Bookshop

The Concord Bookshop, a 64-year-old independent store regarded as one of the best in New England, is beset by a bitter clash between owners and staff. The Concord Bookshop noticed the need for organizational change when the profit margins became tighter. Eight of Concord Bookshop’s employees, including the trio of top manager, have quit or given their notice. The precipitating event was the surprise announced made by President Morgan “Kim” Smith of Concord that a new manager will be hired instead of three managers. Many staffs were outraged due to the de facto demotions and owners’ immovable stance. Smith declined to give numbers but portrayed the store’s financial situation as dire. Smith praised the three managers but states that the three-way management was not working out. But the managers said that the finances were not bad (Mehegan, 2003).
