Social Development Research
Article #1
• 92 under graduate students participated in a social networking experiment.
• Follow up surveys were completed, and found that most students used the web site for only 30 minutes a day and mostly for browsing and not communication.
• Those that did communicate with were previously friends in “real life” before Facebook.
• They also discussed the development of identity and peer relationships that were based on pure online interaction and the difference that Facebook played.
I decided to choose this article due to the social implications that Facebook has on our society and the changes the next generation are going to endure. I think that the lack of face to face interaction will cause a socially undeveloped young adult. The article also goes on to explain how young adults use social tags to help show their identity i.e. religion, politics, work.
If I were to do an Essay I might use this paper, it helps to express current developmental issues that our young adults face today. Social media is everywhere we cannot escape it.
Article #2
• Adolescents activated a lateral part of the MPFC for social versus basic emotions, whereas adults did not.
• Adults showed higher activity in the left temporal pole for social versus basic emotion.
• Adolescents recruit anterior regions more than adults do.
I chose this article because the study of social emotions intrigued me, and how children and adults access different part of their brains.
If I had to write a research paper on this topic I would not choose this article. If I had more knowledge on how the brain works and understood the concepts of the brain, then this article would be of more interest.
