Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold.

Mr. Renfold has a major situation on his hands. If I were in his position I would have a meeting with Alice and Frank. In this meeting I would tell them of the situation (without pointing the finger at Darlene) and inform them that some of their peers dislike the smell and the smoke in the office. I would encourage their feedback about the situation and inform them that we will have to take actions to keep the workplace tidy (which includes your areas aroma). After the meeting with the employees I would have a private meeting with Darlene to inform her that I will go through the necessary measures with the Human Resources Department to see what actions can be taken. I also would let Darlene know that smoking within an office building is not against the law and I do not want to intrude on Alice and Frank’s right as an employer, nor herself.

Describe the policy on smoking that you would recommend to Redwood Associates.

If I were in the predicament to make a policy with Redwood Associates I would want the policy to make mention of a few different things. 1. That all employees are to be treated the same no matter what their ethnicity, culture, smell or appearance. 2. All employees should respect each other’s boundaries and spaces. 3. All employees are encouraged to take three 10 minute smoking breaks out side of the office in a designated smoking area.

I feel that if all employees should be required to take a five to ten minute walk away from their desk no matter how trying the work at hand may be. If an employee feels stressed and over-worked they can tend to produce a lower quality of work. If an employee feels that they are comfortable and trouble-free then they are more likely to produce a higher quality of work. After consulting with the company’s Human Resources Department I would began to implement the new rules and changes.
