The Passion of the Christ by Dulaang UP

The production design, music and cast made the play quite a success together with an amazing Medieval English text as a script.

Passion of the Christ, as I know it, is a story about Jesus’ finals moments on Earth. It counts the significant events from his baptism in the Jordan River to his infamous public death and his resurrection as the Son of God. Mary Magdalene’s conversion from sinner to saint was also considered in the story; As well as the controversial betrayal of Judas Iscariot. Jesus died for us to save us from sin and give us his promised salvation is the main point of the story.

These significant events were pointed out in the play. It was shown more likely like it was in story. The play was integrated with Asian influence considering that it is a medieval production. From costumes to props and also the music has a taste of Asian flavor making the play more native in nature.

The production design was simple yet very convincing. The whole setting was the traditional elevated steps which made the shifting of scenes flawless. With the smoke effects, papier-mâché animals, particularly the big horse, fake blood and ropes, gives a whole lot of texture to the play. Also the lighting and the visual effects were very effective and executed properly. Moreover, the costumes were turbans and cloaks which give the play a hint of simplicity and sophistication; Regardless of the bamboo armor of the soldiers and the paper skirts of the torturers.

Like the production design, the music makes a soulful atmosphere for the audience. Setting the mood for every scene and emphasizing certain emotions. It also provides very convincing sound effects like the water in the Baptism at Jordan River. Live percussions and the male solo gave the play a very ethnic kind of atmosphere.
