1. In the Senate elections of 2010, the Democrats lose 6 seats when the Republicans gained 5 seats, and the remaining seat went to the Independent in Alaska. For the results of House election, the Democrats lose 63 seats when the Republican gained 63 seats. (1) Comparing to the 1994 midterm election, I would say the 2010 midterm election is very similar to the 1994 one. The results of the House and Senate elections in both 1994 and 2010 lead to the changes of control in the House from the Democrats to the Republicans, and reduced the power of Democrats in the Senate. There is another reason that I say the two elections are similar. The health care plan proposed by both president had been criticized seriously by the Republican Party.

The Republicans take over the House but failing to win a Senate majority in the midterm election, still they manage to get back some power that Democrats do not dominant the House and the Senate. The tax cuts issue had been a main issue to negotiating between the two parties. Most of the Democrats want to keep the tax cuts in place for the middle class but not the wealthiest Americans, when Republicans and some of the Democrats want to keep the tax cuts for everyone.(2)One of the philosophies of Democrats is to reduce economic inequality, when “You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong” is one of the philosophies of Republicans. I think both parties’ positions match their philosophies. According to the polls released by CNBC (2), there are more people want to extend the tax cuts for all Americans instead of the middle class only. These might be one of the reasons why Republicans win in the House.

It is very interesting that women, Black, Hispanic tend to vote for Democrats more. Men and whites tend to support Republicans. I believe it is because of the philosophy of Democrats is equal rights, when women and black people have been the victims of inequality all the time.
