Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-frequency (DTMF)

Rotary dial telephones generate a series of electrical pulses as the dial rotates back to its original position. These pulses are what generate what number was dialed. A touch-tone telephone generates tone signals when a person presses a button on the telephone. These tones are known as dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF).

Wide Area Telecommunications Service (WATS) and leased lines.

A Wide Area Telecommunications Service or WATS is a special direct distance dialing (toll) service whereby a subscriber installs a dedicated line arranged for either inward or outward calls or a combination of both. Its design was for bulk rate savings on long distance calls. This type of service is typically used for inbound toll-free service such as an 800 number.

A leased line or private line is any communication channel leased for exclusive use from a common carrier. Many companies used this type of line between two or more locations for dedicated interoffice communication. The key difference between the two are WATS is a specialized line set up to receive long distance communications or to allow long distance communications to an area while a leased line is a dedicated line set up between distinct locations.

Private Branch eXchange (PBX) and Centrex.

Private Branch eXchane (PBX) is a private switching system owned and operated by a business or other organization that connects multiple phone lines within an organization to one or more central offices. It provides call setup and routing within an organization, plus a host of enhanced features (Dean, 2003). A Centrex (central office exchange service) is a service from local telephone companies that does the same as PBX, but business users would not need to purchase their own facilities or equipment.
