In the passage “I think therefore IM” by Jennifer Lee, what’s being discussed is how students are using the mobile communication language with formal writing. Several teachers from different schools give their thoughts of the ongoing problem. Some teachers are upset about what students are handing in as school work and some don’t mind. Students are handing in formal work as if they are texting or instant messaging their buddies. One teacher Ms Harding in the passage stated that “If I see this in your assignments, I will take points off.” She says “kids should know the difference and also they should know when to draw the line when it comes to formal writing and conversational writing.” Teenagers are socializing online so much when it comes to doing their school work they are writing the exact same way as if they were instant messaging or emailing or even texting buddies via cell phone which is unacceptable for most teachers. There are some teachers who say it’s very alarming and rude to give in some type of work like that and others are saying “it’s a fad”, saying that this is just teaching the students the evolution of language. I don’t think it’s a fad because there nothing that beats instant messaging. The only thing that can probably come close is video messaging on the phones but not every phone has that feature yet, but I am guessing pretty soon or as time goes it will be available. On the other hand some teachers are encouraging students to use these abbreviations to their advantage just to get their thinking process going.

Students lose manners with texting so much because they start writing to professors as if they were writing to their peers. Now we all know we can’t speak to our teachers or our professors the same we speak to our peers or friends. However most of these kids are doing school work just to get it over with so they don’t know that.
