Analyzing The IT Move from Shore to Ship
INTRODUCTION:
I received an official work request from my Commanding Officer that stated the following:
The Command will be going underway with the Battle Group onboard the Carrier, moving from shore to ship with no Information System Infrastructure in place. I need the Information System Department to set up an Information System infrastructure onboard the Carrier that will support my staff of 26 people. The move from shore to ship must be swift and seamlessly, not to interfere with any work that is in progress. The Staff will also be working off of other ships in the battle group time-to-time to support operations around the Horn of Africa. There will be Reservists in the building, and the command is limited on funds.
The Systems Analyst and Design in a Changing World, Third Edition, By John W. Satzinger, Robert. Jackson, Stephen D. Burd, Chapter 1, Page 5, Figure 1-1. Pointed out a successful way for analyst’s to approach to solving problems like this. The following Statement of Scope and Goals that I will be using to solve the move onboard ship and how to track equipment and material are listed below.
STEP 1: Research and understand the problem
STEP 2: Verify that the benefits of solving the problem outweigh the costs
STEP 3: Define the requirement for solving the problem
STEP 4: Develop a set of possible solutions (alternatives)
STEP 5: Decide which solution is best and make a recommendation
STEP 6: Define the details of the chosen solution
STEP 7: Implement the solution
STEP 8: Monitor to make sure that you obtain the desired results
