Global Crossing
Global Crossing’s telecommunications are spread worldwide. They are a Bermuda based company and their slogan says it all, “One Planet. One Network. Infinite Possibilities”(Global Crossing, 2006, ¶ 4). Global crossing specializes in multi-media communications such as broadband voice and data networking.” More than 300 internet sites use Global Crossings fiber optic network, including eBay, Yahoo, and MP3.com (Lansa, 2008). They are also responsible for creating the AS/400 hotel mainframe system that operates in most of the Las Vegas Casinos. Global Crossing is one of the most successful and largest growing companies in the world, however, it did not start out that way.
Garry Winnick founded global Crossing in 1997. His original plan was to develop a network of communication between the United States and other countries such as Germany and Great Britain across the Atlantic Ocean using fiber optic cables. This would lead to further successful plans to develop a network of communications with the US, Japan, Latin America and Central America.
By 1999, Global Crossing’s planning paid off. They had already spent over $400 million on an independent cable to connect cities throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. During this time there were many other companies that wanted to partake in this type of networking. This led to the acquisition of two companies, the Frontier Corporation and Cable and Wireless Global Marine. By the end of 1999, a partnership with Microsoft and Softbank led to the creation of Global Crossing Asia, which allowed Asian counties more advanced telecommunications. During this time, Global Crossing began trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Global Crossing Asia began trading on the NASDAQ.
