THE ISLAMIC RELIGION 1

The Islamic Religion is the second largest monotheistic religion in the world, which originated in the Middle East with many similar beliefs with Christianity and Judaism. The definition of Islam according to Mary Pat Fisher, means complete, trusting surrender to God. Islam was founded 610AD by the prophet Muhammed. The sacred book of Islam is called a Koran, and its followers are called Muslims (one who submits to God).

Islam can also be summed up as an Arabic word which means peace, purity, acceptance and commitment. As a religion, Islam calls for complete acceptance of the teachings and guidance of God. A Muslim is one who freely and willingly accepts the supreme power of God and strives to organize his life on total accord with the teachings of God.

Religious practices includes; The Five Pillars of Islam.

1. Shahadah (there is no god but God and Mohammed is his Messenger).

2. Salaat (Continuous round of prayers five time day.)

3. Zakat (Charity, or almsgiving) one prayer is only accepted when one gives.

4. Fasting (Frequent fast are required by Muslims.) The most obligatory is the fast during Ramadan.

5. Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) All Muslims who are physically and financially able are expected to make a pilgrimage once in their life time.

Islamic laws touches virtually every aspect of one’s life, society, encompassing everything from dietary laws and banking to welfare, and appropriate conditions for war. The vast Majority of
