What is ADHD?

I. ADHD is characterized into three categories: Predominantly Inattentive Type, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type, and Combined Type.

There are a number of treatment options that have proven to be effective for children. These strategies include behavioral, pharmacological, and multimodal methods.

V. Two federal laws guarantee children with ADHD a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). They are the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504).

Most people have been around those kids that cannot seem to sit still and they appear to be fidgeting constantly. Then there are those kids that one minute are daydreaming and staring off into space and the next minute are interrupting your conversation. All kids, and even adults, have some of these characteristics to some degree while they are growing up, but there are those kids who do this all the time. The condition that is attributed to these types of characteristics is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There are several disillusions about this disorder in our society. For example, people say that the disorder is not real, or if the parents would only have raised them correctly and disciplined them more, and the children are just lazy and disrespectful. People also believe that ADHD is diagnosed too frequently and kids are overmedicated. Parents need to educate themselves as to what the disorder is, what the treatment options are, and what are the education rights available to children with ADHD....
