Knowledge management as described before capturing and distributing the information necessary to run an organization smoothly. After reading the case study on Frito Lay and Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) it is determined that knowledge management can do a lot for an organization.

Frito Lay was desperately in need of a way to distribute their information. The problem was that there was “no centralized system for finding and consolidating corporate and customer sales information” (Shein). This knowledge management problem only begins there. There was plenty of information their at Frito lay but it was scattered everywhere. As Mike Marino, vice president states, “We had knowledge trapped in files everywhere”. All this information was going to waste. With it being trapped no one was able to benefit from it. What was occurring was that there was a lot of repetitive work being done because there was no central location to find the information. Frito Lay wanted to get something like this in place so that the employees could share their knowledge with the rest of the employees. What Marino wanted was a knowledge management portal on the Intranet so that it could be used as a single point of access for multiple sources of information. “A KM Portal at Frito-Lay would give the sales department a central location for all sales-related customer and corporate information and cut down on the time it took to find and share research” (Shein). The three main goals for Frito-Lay were to streamline knowledge, exploit customer-specific data and foster team collaboration. By doing this Frito Lay expected to have a better sales outcome. Marino states that after putting such portal in place Frito Lay has had increased sales. This portal has also helped the sales team since they don’t reside in the same location. “The tool has become extremely valuable for communication and helps cut down on travel” (Shein).
