The effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality on adolescents’ sexual lives are that they in ways make it seem ok to be sexual with one another. Then there are some to which they show the consequences of having sex and the outcome. The show “Teen Mom” or “16 and Pregnant” is a great example of how the media portrays the consequences and the wrong in having sex at such a young age. It is as the media portrays sex to be the thing to do and if there are virgins than it is seemed to them by the media that the “in thing” to do is to have sex and not be a virgin. That being a virgin is not “cool”. It shows young men as sexual predators or pressuring the girls. It is far and few between that a show displays age appropriate sexuality for its viewers.

Some negative effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality is that it is making adolescents want to have sex and do four play and be in the “in/cool” crowd. The positive effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality are that it does give clear and concise information of teen pregnancies, STDS, and AIDS. Another is of how they should use protection to not spread the diseases and to help reduce the risk of pregnancy and to use birth control for the women so they will not end up as teen mothers. There are some shows that have the “cool/popular girl” being a virgin and her being pressured to have sex, but she looks at all the pros and cons and thinks it over hard for a while then made her decision of not doing it. As I stated above another positive is the shows in which shows teen girls and boys how real and hard it is to be pregnant, have the child, work, go to school, and be a teen in there showings that are real teens doing it all.

The media’s portrayal of sexuality affected my life by making me want to do it and be in the “cool” crowed and make guys want to like me more. It also has influenced many of my friends by them thinking the same as I did and wanting the same thing. I stayed...
