The three dimensions of love include passion, intimacy and commitment… and are recognized as the major components of love. According to the text passion is the dimension that is considered the motivational component. It reflects attraction, romance and sexual desire. Intimacy reflects feelings of closeness, trust and the sharing of one’s innermost thoughts. A long term, caring relationship is what comes of commitment.

Intimacy and passion combined can create romance. Intimacy and commitment combined can create a companionate kind of love. Passion and commitment create a fatuous love. Passion seems to be the component that lights the fire in the relationship, but the commitment part is just as important when it comes to a person’s decision and drive (fire) to maintain the love; the passion, intimacy, etc.

Consummate love is the ultimate love, and it only comes when all three love dimensions (passion, intimacy and commitment) are intact. This is the love that most people strive to have. Many see this as the impossible, but it is very possible indeed. It’s rather rewarding too! Obtaining consummate love isn’t so much a matter of work, but a matter of dedication. As said before, many other relationships can form with a combination of the three dimensions on the triangle, however when all three are strong then consummate love is the end (beginning) result. Some relationships can go long term without consummate love and with only one or two of the three dimensions, but they aren’t considered the healthiest.
