Acc 225 Final Project

The difference between Muslims and Arabs is that Muslims are people who follow Islamic religion and of different ethnicities and Arabs are people from Arabia that can be of different religions. In other words, Arab is considered an ethnicity and Muslim is considered as those that believe in and follow the Islamic faith.

One of the policy changes that have occurred is the Justice Department allowing the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate Americans without evidence of unlawful activity. Under this new policy, the FBI is allowed to consider race and ethnicity as cause to open an investigation. In other words, this allows the FBI to rely on a terrorist profile made up of characteristics that could single out Muslims and Arabs instead of a basis of that person’s behaviorisms. The FBI would also be allowed to ask open-ended questions such as where the person works, if he or she is married or has children, and could initiate an investigation if any of that person's information is considered suspicious.

Two characteristics of Orientalism are religiousness and its variety among the many people of the world. These create stereotypes amongst many people. Hate crimes stem from ignorance. Different cultures and ethnicities create in some people a fear of the unknown and rather than learn about the unknown, some people turn to ignorance. Orientalism creates stereotypical characteristics such as a person believing that one Arabs behavior results in all Arabs behaving that way. This is not true, however. An example of orientalism is the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Arabs or anyone who looks like those that orchestrated the attacks on those planes may be targeted because of pure ignorance.

The best way to promote tolerance, respect, and eliminate prejudice is to create awareness and educate about these issues. Any place is a good place to start, but a definite head start would be to begin educating all school children. They are the future as us before...
