Effects of Stress

What steps of the general adaptation syndrome will I experience?

The first stage of the general adaptation, alarm reaction stage, would be my first initial response on the onset of my pursuit of the promotion, whereas I would notice an increase in my heart rate and my breathing would become irregular. I believe that I could handle the extra hours along with more responsibility even though it is a daily stressor and not have to worry about going into any further adaptation stages. There is a chance that I could enter into the resistance stage because the pressure will intensify and I will have additional stress that I didn’t have before. I would experience a decrease in my endocrine system and my sympathetic nervous system. When I have reached this point I would then need to find a solution to the added pressure that I have now, otherwise if I don’t find a solution it could be possible to go into the exhaustion stage.

What emotional and cognitive effects might this stressor produce?

These stressors would cause a very unhealthy condition and could affect me both mentally and physically. I could experience state anxiety; which is a condition that lasts only temporarily. Then I would become frustrated at everything and get angry at things I would not normally get angry over. Next my cognitive abilities would decline to where I would have a hard time thinking clearly and that would affect my problem solving skills.

If this stress continues, how might it affect my health?

If I continue to put my body under stress it would more than likely start producing corticosteroids, which in turn would suppress my immune system. My body would then produce less white cells (leukocytes), which would suppress my body’s ability to produce adequate antibodies to fight off harmful antigens. I could then become very susceptible to many illnesses and many forms of diseases.
