Cite two circumstances when oral communication would be more effective than written communication. Give examples of each.

Oral communication is vital when a dialogue needs to take place such as meetings, interviews, conversations, conferences, phone calls, or expressing meanings. Oral communication can introduce non-verbal cues such as body language and tone. There are many advantages when using oral communication versus written communication. Oral delivery provides immediate results, creates transparency, can be spontaneous, and save time. The following examples cite two separate circumstances when oral communication is more effective than written communication.

With regards to my first example, I will describe a practice in my workplace. Every week on Friday, my organization has a staff/faculty meeting. Even though weekly meetings are a requirement for our accreditation, this is also essential for our staff/faculty to discuss any issues, create new ideas, and plan team projects. These meetings allow us to update each other on our work progress, share expertise and get fresh ideas on the subject matter, and provide an outlet for frustrations or concerns. It is important for us to meet on a weekly basis to ensure we are on the right track. This prevents issues from becoming ongoing problems. It also helps from a cohesive group. If the meeting was through written communication, the team dynamic would be diminished. Oral communication is important as experienced through these meetings for several reasons. First, oral, real time togetherness is regarded as the highest delivery channel when conveying richness of information, gains the strongest control over the receiver’s attention, and immediate feedback is delivered. Second, as a team, feedback is essential for us in providing opinions and sharing our experiences to improve any issues in the workplace.
