Texting and Driving

Texting and driving is a very serious problem throughout the United States. It has been proven to be as deadly as drunk driving. It causes the driver to take their concentration off the road and even for a second a deadly crash can occur. Texting has become a necessity for many and that means it doesn’t stop for driving either. People feel the need to be connected with people at all times. That’s why cell phones were invented. For many, a car ride could mean a boring time where they want to have a conversation. They would do this by talking on the phone or texting.

I believe texting and driving is a very dumb thing to do. I will not do it, but I can’t say I’ve never done it. If I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket I won’t look at it until I have gotten to where I was going. I won’t even look at it at red lights just because I don’t want to. When I do look at it, I feel very uncomfortable and I am not a very good driver when I do. I have an old truck and the alignment is off so I have to have my hands on the wheel just to keep it going straight. I do feel that there should be an end to texting and driving. Many drivers say that they can multitask at the wheel but study after study has proven them otherwise. There has to be a way to prevent texting while driving from happening.

Drunk driving has caused many tragic accidents. Texting and driving can cause the same affect and has. According to Matt Richtel’s article, “Not Driving Drunk, but Texting? Utah Law Sees Little Difference” the two can be related. “Studies show that talking on a cellphone while driving is as risky as driving with a .08 blood alcohol level -- generally the standard for drunken driving -- and that the risk of driving while texting is at least twice that dangerous” (Richtel 1).
