What degree of the gender roles we play is determined by our biology?

“Is it mainly because of the way men and women are raised, or are the differences part of their biological makeup?” (Myers, 2007, Pg. 142). “Today’s genetic science indicates how experience uses genes to change the brain” (Myers, 2007, Pg. 148). In other words, the way people are raised in their life as a child is what changes the gender roles.

How much is determined by our culture?

“Culture, is what’s shared by a large group and transmitted across generations—ideas, attitudes, behaviors, and traditions. We can see the shaping power of culture in ideas about how men and women should behave” (Myers, 2007, Pg. 145). Everyone has a different culture the way their accent is, type of foods they eat, the way they dress, what religion they believe in. It is basically how they were raised what they were taught on what is right and wrong. “The most significant trait that nature has endowed us with, it seems, is the capacity to adapt—to learn and to change. Therein lies what all agree is culture’s shaping power” (Myers, 2007, Pg. 145).

How are independence, connectedness, social dominance, aggression, and sexuality influenced by gender roles?

(Keep in mind that times have changed of how men and women were taught to treat each other)

Independence –

(Past) Men’s independence is more than likely based on competition they want to be able and prove that they can take care of the house hole and their family, as for women they tend to love being cared for by their partner.

(Present) Some men rely on their women for everything while they become bums at home and not worry about working again, as for some women you have those independent women that work and care for themselves and believe that they don’t need a man to care for them.

(Past) Men treated their women with no respect and didn’t care for any type of connectedness and women were ok with it because of...
