VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Network is one of the latest network technologies that have been developed in the past few years. VLAN s has started to gain recognition only recently. Local Area Network technologies are growing at a extremely fast rate and also the cost of the equipment required for implementing a secure network, has also become very expensive. The need for a cost effective networks but without compromising in network security and performance, paved the way for Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), which can meet the above requirement (Regan, 2004).

VLAN implementation is a complex process which involves in depth probing of various factors such as Protocols, Broadcast Domains, Switches and Hubs, IP routing which only an expert having in depth knowledge in these areas can implement.

VLAN has a great deal of functionality to networks. VLANs are created mainly for separating the network in to separate broadcast domains each representing separate functionalities or physical locations within an organization. An organization may have many departments such as R&D, Operations. VLANS can be implemented specifically for the Individual department (like having separate network groups) within an organization.

There are a few key things one must be aware of when implementing a VLAN.

In order to create a VLAN you need a layer 2 switch. There is a common misconception, that separate software installation is required for implementing VLAN through a network.
