Preparations for Landing a Job as Network and Computer System Administrator

Abstract

The motivating factor for my research into becoming a system administrator was first of all, to see how it would apply to myself in my current situation. Would it be realistic for me at my age to begin preparations to attempt to enter the field which I had coveted for many years? To that end, I ran a survey amongst my current contact list of friends and relatives focusing on the number of years people have spent outside of their current field of work before embarking on their current or final field of work. Something more specific to becoming a system administrator would have been appropriate, but that was not afforded at the time. Following is the result of my survey of nine subjects.

This has afforded a psychological green light to continue on my research. What I had hoped to find is a more tangible and realistic pathway to becoming a system administrator for those who are planning on attending college or are currently attending college but also are gleaning through the want ads just hoping for the best.

Let me give a short background on myself. I am currently working at a logistical section of an I.T. department of the military. Although I am working for an I.T. department, my current job content requires work at a warehouse and practice concerning logistics and supplies. In other words, my current job is not I.T. related. However, till four years ago, I had been working for six years as a system technician in the I.T. department of an accounting firm. I will draw from that experience in parts of this report. As implied earlier, my aim is to get back into the I.T. field and eventually become a system administrator. So personally, this is not just a report. It is information I can and will use.
