Knowledge and Abilities

In today’s economic climate with unemployment at an all-time high, it is more important than ever to maintain a competitive edge in one’s chosen profession. The most successful individuals do not allow their careers to remain stagnant and take advantage of opportunities for advancement and additional learning. Increasingly, the average working person copes with the responsibilities of work and family while pursuing higher education on a part-time basis. Many corporate entities encourage employees to increase their knowledge by offering training opportunities, tuition assistance and other incentives that will benefit both the employee and the company. Educated individuals are more productive and increased productivity promotes expansion and growth in an organization.

In light of the increasing need for educational opportunities and in an effort to network with peers and stay abreast of advances in their field, more individuals are becoming members of professional organizations.

The Airman’s Roll Call newsletter, for the Week of January 16, 2008 – January 22, 2008, listed the following reasons United States Air Force (USAF) enlisted members should belong to professional military associations:

• They build camaraderie, esprit de corps and provide insight to military legislation

• Many associations raise money for Airmen and their families. Many also provide scholarship opportunities for Airmen to further their education

• Professional military associations know what is needed by the profession (whether it’s a career field specific-association, or for all Airmen of all ranks) as members are the professionals themselves

• Members are able to network with each other, and provide leadership, vision, mission and values

• Most professional associations provide a wide variety of support services that include membership benefits, leadership development, resources, advocacy support, and professional development

• On a personal level,...
