Abstract

The following information will be discussing the matters in regards to electronic medical records. What are the advantages and disadvantages and leading to the matters of security and confidentiality of patients and their records.

“The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence, and educational advantages, but what he will do with the things he has.” I feel that this quote has a lot of meaning towards the security and confidentiality issues that travel word by mouth just as well in the computer-generated world. The topic in which needs to be addressed is the advantages and disadvantages of using computerized medical records. To begin I will be addressing the advantages of using computerized medical records and will be providing two examples.

A few ways why computerized medical records are in a safer place when generated through a computerized manner are the following reasons: Legibility of record, which emphasizes hand written documentation to a computerized print which makes hand written documentation more legible to other staff other than the doctor that wrote the commentary. Safer data is emphasizes the basis of new users often worry over the noticeable misplaced data due to system malfunctions. With a well intended and tested backup format and disaster revival system, a computer-based record is much more dependable and less prone to data failure than straight paper-based records. One example would be from a study, “MedScape Today” states “When participants were asked what impact, if any, the EMR has had on their work lives, several major themes emerged. Physicians and staff clearly believed that the EMR had changed not only how they managed patient records but also how they communicated with each other, provided patient care services, and performed their jobs.
