Participating in professional networks and associations
There are many professional networks and associations you can participate in to obtain knowledge, skills and expertise about your industry. These can be gained from work teams, suppliers, committees, internal or external customers, government agencies and professional (occupational) associations, advisory committees , lobby groups and groups set up for specific projects.
Some of the types of professional networks and associations are:
Training, delivery, planning and review committees
Governance structure committees
Asset and infrastructure management committees
Workforce and organizational committees
Vet issue and development groups
Occupational health and safety committees
Inductions e.g. Information systems, records, physical resources, human resources
Fire warden and first aid officer training
Team meetings
Industry advisory groups
Special project committees e.g. Performance review committee, career planning committee and Values and code committee
By networking we can increase our knowledge, increase our skills, relate key information to others in the organization, procure the latest developments meet people with common interests and gain access to resources that may be useful when required.
Using negotiation skills
When undertaking negotiations with business colleagues (e.g. manager, suppliers, customers) negotiations should follow a process of getting to know each other. Defining each party’s objectives (e.g. what they want, how it can be achieved, how it can be implemented cost effectively), expressing disagreements (putting a case forward as to why that won’t work, but giving an alternative plan), reassessing and compromising and finally reaching an agreement
