Personal Action Plan
For this assignment, I had to observe people moving and behaving in a space that I associate with a socioeconomic class different from my own. I must first understand the four types of social classes. The first class is the lower- class; few of these people have finished high school, unemployed, and homeless. They also suffer from lack of medical care. The second class is the working- class; they are people with minimally education, majority of their work is “manual labor,” they also have no prestige. Two types of classes are within the working- class, the unskilled- workers like dishwashers, maids, cashiers, and waitresses. Then the skilled- workers, also- called blue- collar workers like the carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. The third class is the middle- class, also- called the white- collar workers. They have more money than the lower and working class people, but less than the upper-class. People in this class are doctors, lawyers, teachers, managers, and stockbrokers. Last, the upper- class, this includes people with “new money” and “old money” these are extremely wealthy people. They live in million dollar homes and their children attend the best schools. They have more prestigious than the lower-upper class (Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2000-2011).
Before I can observe someone else’s class, I have to find what type of class I belong in. I am a registered nurse and currently in school to obtain my baccalaureate science in nursing degree. I consider myself to be highly educated, I have a job as a nurse manager with benefits and a decent salary, and I own my home, which is in a gated community; so I consider myself as middle- class.
