Consensus and Conflict Perspectives

In order to fully understand law in society we have to first look at the definitions of these two concepts of consensus and conflict. Consensus is a concept of society in which the absence of conflict is seen as the equilibrium state of society based on a general or widespread agreement among all members of a particular society. Conflict is a disagreement or clash between opposing ideas, principles, or people this can be a convert or over conflict. In the United States makes an effort to establish a common ground were everyone can agree on. Just like in the last Presidential election many states have propositions for people to vote on to legalize same-sex marriages and medical marijuana the consensus in some states was either for or against those propositions.

Conflict perspective or collection of theories which places emerges out of sociology in human society. Conflict theory is consistently changing to suit conflict, crisis and social change. Consensus, is a sociological perspective or collection of theories based from a large group to establish social order and regulations. Right now in the US on these laws that are illegal in most states like same-sex marriages is more conflict perspective because higher class majorities oppose it because they may seem that it’s immoral.

Furthermore, the difference between consensus and conflict perspective is pretty much completely opposite from each other. Consensus is the more optimistic side of determining law versus conflict perspective which is more negative because people of a higher social status.
