Responsible Consumption Paper

It’s a blatant fact that our environment needs us more than ever! By us, we mean the people of this country the blindly destroy its very fabric everyday without thinking twice. It would be wrong to say that there haven’t been efforts by the media to educate and influence our culture in some way, whether it is in a positive or negative light. But some of the most important issues regarding the environment that have frequently been communicated through the media are the global warming effects, the introduction of ethanol fuel and the innovative creation of hybrid vehicles. Especially for these times of high costing petroleum we are experiencing in this country.

Through our readings during this course, it is fair to say that the motion picture industry defines what is acceptable or considered to be “Cool” in today’s popular American culture.

Global warming has always been an environmental issue; but, most recently is has gotten much attention through films and documentaries. An Academy Award was given to the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”. This film describes both the affect and effects of global warming throughout the world. Hollywood is also targeting the youth through animated films such as “Ice Age”, which deals with global warming, and “Happy Feet”, which deals with depleting of the oceans resources. Although these films are cartoon in nature, they deal with mature topics. Through the creative writing of these films, people are now more informed, and in some cases involved with environmental issues. To site a few examples on how the movies mentioned above affect us (general public), on being more responsible or aware of these issues; I for one, am an avid fisherman, and used to always keep more than I could consume. I would usually give the excess catch to friends and family. Today, however; I am extremely aware of our limited resources, due to the effects of over fishing, I now, keep only what I will eat, and...
