Case Study: Is Margo too Macro?
GB600 Leadership Strategies for a Changing World
Polarities in Margo’s Approach to Leadership
By being a macro manager Margo Santelli has allowed her team of managers to take ownership of their tasks and to become responsible for their respective sales units. At the same time she has neglected their supervision and some among them don’t think they have support they need. This is clearly not an either-or situation. There is a polarity to be managed here. The poles are the two different approaches to leadership that Margo could take. There is macro-management, which is what she is currently doing. The other pole would me micro-managing.
Macro-management “can be explained as an approach where managers are much less focused on specific details but rather on the bigger picture in the workplace” (StaffWise, 2009, par. 2). Now, micro-management is viewed “as an approach where managers apply excessive levels of control over the work details, schedules, and activities of others in the workplace” (StaffWise, 2009, par. 1). Please review the polarity map in Appendix 1 to better understand Margo’s situation.
