Leadership Approach

Leadership is defined as a process use by a person that influences others to accomplish objectives and goals (Clark, 2010). Leaders also direct organizations in such a manner that it makes the organization more coherent (Clark, 2010). Leadership is also known as having the ability to inspire others (Clark, 2010).

Power-influence Approach

Power is considered important when it comes to influencing workers, but it is also important when it comes to influencing superiors and people that do not work within the organization. Leaders use power as a means of influencing followers and attaining group goals. Power is also the ability of a leader to influence decisions and actions. Influence can be either cohesively or forcefully (Alyn, n.d.). Some people may use their position or their title to force people to follow specific policies (Alyn, n.d.).

Strengths of Power-influence Approach

According to Yukl (2006) the power-influence approach is defined as an approach in which the process of influence between leaders and others is examined. Having power is an important piece of the puzzle when trying to influence others into thinking a certain way, or abiding by rules or policies. Using force to influence others can lead to other problems down the line.

Weaknesses of Power-influence Approach

There is nothing wrong with using influence when dealing with people. Influence is what keeps a company moving up, and attracts new politicians into office. The influence that is used during a political campaign can make or break the politician. If the public does not understand what the politicians are speaking about, all the influence in the world will not help. Many people may see influencing as manipulating others.
