Overview
According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the first use of the term “emotional intelligence” is attributed to Wayne Payne’s doctoral thesis, A Study of Emotion: Developing Emotional Intelligence from 1985. Even though the term had appeared in other writings prior to Payne’s thesis, but emotional intelligence can be traced to the famous English naturalist, Charles Robert Darwin work on “the importance of emotional expression for survival and second adaptation.” The discussion of emotional intelligence has been around for a long time. But never has it been so important in business and other areas of leadership and management as it is now. The study of emotional intelligence has reawakened my consciousness and has given me a clear picture of why some companies or leaders outperform their major competitors. Emotional intelligence is the bar that sets great leaders apart from the good and bad leaders. This study also reveals to me some of the reasons why the financial tower (Enron/Andersen) collapsed, together with other large companies which lead to the financial meltdown of our economy. Besides the issue of ethics and responsibilities, most of those top executives lacked emotional intelligence. And so, they fell short of their goals and were caught up in financial scandal instead moving their Business and institution to a next level; from good to great.
In this paper, I am going to apply what I have learnt from the study of “Global Leadership and Management”, and describe my management/leadership style resulting from a series of diagnostic instruments and feedbacks. After such, I will develop an action plan that...
