I think the main reason ambulatory care is becoming more popular is due to insurance and the lack of insurance. For patients without insurance the cost of having a procedure or care done in an outpatient setting is cheaper because an overnight stay is not needed. For those patients that do have insurance, having a procedure done in an outpatient setting may be required from the health plan, because the health plan does not want to pay for overnight stay if it is not needed. I think ambulatory care is changing society’s view on health care because it put more of the control in the patient’s hand. If the patient does not have to use the hospital for all their procedures they have the option of going to the place of their choosing. The patient can pick their place based on cost or reputation or a little bit of both. I think there is always room for improvement for the services provided. Some areas that need improvement are the scheduling of patients. Many places book multiple patients at the same time and their time with the doctor is also limited, most times to 15 minutes or less. I understand most of it is due to the financial side of the business and I think in most cases the financial side needs to come second to the patient’s care. Of course this is not a change that will happen quickly or maybe not ever but even small strides can make a big difference.
