Abstract

Electronics are always changing. Unless you are at the sore when the product is released the first day, it is close to being replaced by the time you get home with it. TVs are just now coming out of the HD phase, next up 3D. This paper will look at some the trends TV has taken and the possible next step into 3D.

3D TV, Here to stay or not.

The TV industry has undergone several changes since that first black and white broadcast by RCA in 1936, (“History of Film, Television & Video” 2010). Tube sets hit the market originally, with High-Tech reporting fewer than 7,000 TV in the US in 1945. Some of the past changes were color in 1965, portable TVs, projection screens, flat screen, HD, plasma, LCD, LED, and now 3D. The 3D TVs are coming, the question is will they become the next must have and find a spot in most every household, or will they flop out of existence. Time and consumer value placed on the emerging technology will ultimately answer this question.

If 3D televisions are to become the consumer hit the TV manufactures and retailers would like them too, they will first have to over-come several pitfalls. Some of these are: cost, limited angle of view, affective screen size, required glasses, and available programming. According to Forbes TV executives expect 3D to take off big before year 2015. If this is to be the case, the marketing departments for the industry will have to help the consumer’s progress through the decision-making process of buying the products, as laid out by Mullins and Walker in chapter four of Marketing Management. As a new type of format, the consumers will need a lot of help with the information search, and comparing the products.

Consumers will have to be convinced they need a new TV technology, this could be a difficult sell in a good economy, but add the struggling economy with the fact this change is right behind the HD...
