As noted in the news recently, the military is relooking its policy on gays and lesbians in the military. This is an issue that has been going on for a long time. On November 30, 1993, President Bill Clinton signed into law “don’t ask don’t tell”. The purpose of this law was to safeguard gays and lesbians in the military. It also mandated the discharge of all openly gay, lesbian and bi-sexual in the military (SLDN). Because of the close proximity of soldiers during field exercises and deployments, it is believed that having a homosexual soldier within the ranks may cause discomfort and threaten unit cohesiveness among heterosexuals. This is based on an individual preferences and comfort level. Some people are homophobic and would rather work alone than to work with a homosexual. Our perception leads us to believe that homosexual men are attracted to all men. Just like one may be attracted to only Hispanic women, the same goes for homosexuals. Just because you are a men doesn’t mean a gay men is interested in you.

Gays and lesbians have been serving side by side with heterosexual men and women for years. Just because a person is a homosexual doesn’t make them any less of a soldier. We all have certain rights as citizens of a country and each of us prefer for others to respect our rights. A soldier who performances their daily duties above and beyond the call of duty and is homosexual should not be treated any differently from a heterosexual soldier. Just as a person may choose to be a Muslim or a Buddhist doesn’t make them any less of a soldier than a Christian or a Jew. Homosexuality is a life style just like a Caucasian who prefers to date only black women. Is it a crime to date outside your race? According to the Bible, homosexuality is a sin, so is adultery and stealing. Why are soldiers allowed to be retained in the military if they committed adultery or steal?
