Kindergarten

 

Kindergarten is an exciting and fun-filled time in a child's life.  Children meet new friends, interact with new teachers and expand their knowledge of the world.  The full-day program at Rolling Hills provides an interactive and developmentally appropriate environment in which children participate in an array of learning activities.  Children interact both socially and physically within their environment.  The academic and social challenges assist them in becoming critical thinkers and life-long learners.

Our Kindergarten curriculum offers an integrated, thematic approach to learning.  Within each thematic unit, the children strengthen their literacy skills through the use of big books, repetitive books and many other literature-rich materials.  Children make predictions about the text, recognize capital and lower-case letters, associate sounds with letters, and participate in the reading and writing of stories.

Our Mathematics curriculum follows a "hands-on" approach and is designed to address the New York State Standards.  During integrated math lessons, the children work independently or in cooperative groups to sort, extend patterns, count and problem solve.  This "hands-on" approach to teaching mathematics includes the use of many manipulatives, including unifix cubes, pattern blocks, counters, coins, attribute blocks, as well as many others.  Using manipulatives gives children the chance to learn in a concrete manner.  We encourage problem solving and are always connecting our activities to real world experiences.

Our Kindergarten  children participate in many special activities such as field trips which coordinate with our units of study.  Kindergartners participate in our PIR program  (Partners in Reading) as well as many wonderful programs the PTA plans every year.
