Functions of Management

Abstract

Management is broken down into four functions; Controlling, Leading, Organizing and Planning. Following the scenario of unit one, being part of management the inventor now need to make a decision about how to manufacture the product. He has three possible options. He could establish manufacturing of all parts and final assembly or he could establish assembly only operation with components purchased from local vendors. Last, he has the option to outsource the entire manufacturing operation to an offshore company.

Functions of Management

“Management is a job with a very wide spectrum of duties. But every manager should always stick to the principle of 4 basic management functions when achieving his goals.”(Matt) The four functions are planning, organizing, directing, and control. Part of management is deciding on how the product is going to be produce. He could have all manufacturing of all components and final assembly on his own or he could have the components made by another company and make the final product himself. Lastly, he could outsource all of it to another company. Each has it’s the pros and cons that will influence decision on functions of management.

No matter what the inventor is doing, he has to plan it out first. “He has to set your goals straight and decide how he is going to achieve them. In addition, he has to decide how much money or time will be invested and how many people will be employed.”(Matt)

On step two, he will have to organize himself to achieve what he has planned to accomplish in the first step. “He will need to start gathering the resources, to decide who will do what (in case more people are involved) and prepare everything so he can start working.”(Matt)

On this step, he will need to start leading people to his goal. On this step, it is very important to communicate with people who are helping him. “He will need to set up lower management and make sure...
