Diagnosis and Treatment

With Chronic Kidney Disease a doctor will order some blood tests and urine test to help find out if the kidneys are working right. They will measure the amount of urea and creatinine in the blood. The doctor will ask the patient some question about any kidney problems in the past or whether the patient has any family history of kidney disease. When testing a patient they will test the level of creatinine in the blood to find out the glomerular filtration rate, this will show how much kidney function that they still have. The doctor may order an ultrasound or a CT scan to look at the kidneys, these test will show the doctor the pictures of the kidneys so they can measure the size of them, estimate the blood flow through the kidneys, and to see if the urine flow is blocked.

To treat Chronic Kidney Disease is a hard disease to treat, first they need to find what is causing it; such as diabetes or high blood pressure. They will want the patient to take some medication to help the kidneys function properly. A person will have to change the lifestyle that they might lead; they may have to follow a diet that is easy on the kidneys, exercise regularly, no more drinking alcohol, or using tobacco.

A treatment plan that the patient will have to follow is to be tested for diabetes, then talk with a nutritionist to design a meal plan that the patient will be able to follow, design an exercise program. I would prescribe a medication, maybe a low dose of Lisinopril to help the kidney function. I would also like the patient to have follow up blood and urine work so we can track how their kidneys are functioning after the changes are made.
