Within the health care industry as in other industries, human resource management’s function is to have a well chosen staff to successfully, efficiently and effectively perform within the organization. The different types of staffing that are required in the health care industry can be classified into two groups, clinical and non-clinical. Hiring the right person for the job is essential and necessary. With the different levels in healthcare from the physicians to the administrative staff, it is important to have a fully functional human resources staff to understand the different needs and requirements of each department and personnel.

Kabene, Orchard, and Howard ( 2006) suggests that  [The connection between human resources management and health care is particularly multifaceted,] and thus the human resources department must take on tasks such as strategic planning, strategic implementation, and strategic relationships in the organization to develop goals, processes and adhere to the many guidelines set by the government and the organization. In the healthcare industry, there are many challenges that can arise that can cause extra stressors and hurdles for the human resource manager and their department. They must factor in the economic area, workforce training, the size of the organization, and cultural factors are all to be considered.

According to Staren ( 2009) “One of the most important yet difficult responsibilities of a leader in any organization is motivating staff.” ( p. 1 ). It is important to motivate employees to ensure that the feel that they are appreciated and those they are noticed. It is often that individuals feel as if they are “just a number” and are overlooked.
