Examine the main trends in Birth and Death in the United Kingdom since 1900.

The main trends clarify the overall population’s size, whether it’s a natural increase or decrease and net migration. Between the 1900’s and till today major changes has taken place to the UK’s population. The total population increased from about 38 million to roughly 61 million people. The population’s structure features the sex balance and the age structure of its members. Age structure is influenced by the Birth rate and total fertility rate in which by average works out the life expectancy. Birth rate is the ratio of live births in an area to the population of that area; per 1000 of the population per year and Death rate is the ratio of deaths in an area to the population of that area; per 1000 of the population per year

Many Sociologists have recognised a variety of reason why the long term decline in the Birth rate since the 1900. These involved social, economic, cultural, legal, political and technological factors. A major change which cause the Birth rate to decline was, the change of the position of woman during the 20th century, woman now have the right to vote, increase in the educational opportunities for woman, it’s known girls now do better than boys at school. Woman are getting paid in employment in this century, plus laws have been put in place to promote this, Equal pay act 1963 and the Sex discrimination Act too, woman and men’s role in the household are becoming equal, easier access to divorce and woman finally have more control over the fertility they have the opportunity to have abortions or not, or to take reliable contraception. As result of this woman now have opportunities which they wouldn’t have had in the 1900s. Woman are deciding to delay have childbearing or not to have children whatsoever and putting their careers before making a family.
