Thread - Week 2 - DQ 4
Due Thursday
Identify online advertising options. What are the advantages and disadvantages of online ads? Are online ads effective? Explain your answer.
Advertising “is the practice of disseminating information in an attempt to influence a buyer-seller transaction” (Rainer & Turban, 2008, p.178). The most common online advertising methods are: pop-ups, banners, and email. Pop ups appears when users enter or exit specific web sites. Pop ups are often criticized by users as they are considered intrusive. Banners are electronic billboards that contain a short message to advertise a product or service. The limited amount of space is a major disadvantage for these forms of advertisements. Finally, sending emails to advertise products and services is an emerging marketing channel. The major advantage is its cost effectiveness implementation and it allows the advertiser to receive a quicker responses compared to other traditional channels (Rainer & Turban, 2008).
I have used Craiglist several times a form of online advertisement. I had to post job opportunities as property manager, maintenance technician, and porter for of the some buildings I supervise. Further, I used it to offer housing (i.e. apartments for rent). I cannot complain about the results I obtained through this website. I was able to fill the vacancies with good quality people; I also received good applications. The owners of the buildings I work for love these forms of advertisement as they are free! A small ad for the weekend on the newspaper may range between 200 and 300 dollars. However, I do agree that the information obtained on Craiglist needs to be screened as anybody can post on it.
