The story begins when Carter Diamond the head of “The Cartel is killed by the Haitians after his trial for racketeering and money laundering. The two organizations are at odds because the Haitians discovered how much money the Cartel is making and tries to force them out of town. Carter’s assassination leads to the beginning of war with the Haitians. The Cartel is now faced with finding a suitable replacement to head the organization.
Carter Jones is introduced to the Diamond family when he attends the home going of his absentee father. Meanwhile the Haitians arrive to inflict more pain on the Diamond family and gun fire erupts inside the walls of the church. The formal introductions would have to wait as the members of “The Cartel” are forced to defend themselves and the young Carter assists with pushing the Haitians to retreat. Carter’s attendance was not met with welcome because the Diamond clan wasn’t aware that he existed and he decides to leave to allow the family to mourn.
Later in his hotel he receives a visit from the right hand man to his late father. This visit is intended to convince Carter to stay in Miami to help the Diamond family. Young Carter is reluctant because they don’t know him and he feels that they aren’t his family. He’s resentful because Carter had never been a father to him. Polo goes on to explain that he identified with his response and although the deceased hadn’t been physically present he provided financially for the young man. Carter ends the conversation and Polo pushes further by emphasizing the seriousness of the war with the Haitians. Before Polo departs from Carter’s presence he offers his father’s seat at The Cartel and informs him that there’s a meeting awaiting his presence. Carter weighs all his...
