Does anybody remember when the Conservatives fell short of the 155 seats needed to get the majority with only getting 143 seats in the House of Commons? Didn’t the Bloc win 50 seats with all their votes coming from Quebec? The Conservative party has recently released a revamped batch of attack ads against Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton. It seems that the Tories have decided to add Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe to their campaign of attack ads. Surprisingly enough, the Tories’ direction has been aimed at trying to divide a province which looks for sovereignty from Canada anyway. What a coincidence. Unfortunate for the Conservatives, they chose a strategy that will prove to be ineffective and can possibly backfire. With a strategy that could have its benefits, the negatives are definitely outweighing them. Moreover, with all the historical evidence, it’s surprising that the Tories would choose this way to target Quebec voters. The Conservatives really need to take themselves back to the drawing board to figure out a new strategy to get their majority that they are desperately looking for.

The assumption is taken that when the Conservatives stirred up the idea of creating an attack ad against the Bloc it would enable them to get more votes. Who can blame them? The tactic of making another party leader look bad seems like the easiest way of turning other Quebec voters to the conservative vote. The obvious outcomes to their ad working in their favour would be more votes for the conservatives during federal election. Dare I also mention the fact that the conservatives can possibly gain the extra seats needed to obtain a majority in the House of Commons. What the Conservatives fail to realize is that they are opening a Pandora’s Box of results that can possibly go wrong.
