The Medieval Period As Dominated By Catholic Religion.

Introduction.

Medieval period is a western history traditionally dated from the fall of the Roman Empire to the dawn of Renaissance period (the 15th century), it is called the medieval period of the Middle age. With the collapse of the Roman Empire, Christianity in form of Catholic religion became the standard- bearing of the western civilization and the only reorganized religion. Its ideas and institutions were derived largely from the turbulent events of the Early Middle Ages and the rebirth of culture in the later years.

The Church in the Medieval Period.

The medieval church played a far greater role in medieval England than the church does today; the Catholic Church was the single, largest, most unified structure in the medieval Europe. The church dominated everyone’s life, from the town to villages to the richest King and the lowest King. With the exception of the small Jews, everyone living in Europe then was a Christian; they strongly believe that God, heaven and hell exists. From the earliest young age, people were taught the way of service to the Lord and the Church doctrines. They were also taught to believe that the only way to go to heaven is through the Catholic Church and if the church allows them.

The control of the Church was total; they have their own law, lands, money and also work together with the Government. The Church imposes taxes on people in addition to this, they work for the church free and were expected to give ten percent (10%) of their wages. This could be paid either with money, goods or farm products and failure to pay means hell fire after death.

“It depicts the church as ruled in a totalitarian and authoritarian way by power-hungry popes, aided by the Holy Inquisition, enriching themselves by exacting tithes from impoverished peasants and extorting indulgence money from misguided believers”. (Liere F.V.)
