Communication is defined by dictionary.com as an interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. In the health care field communication is extremely important, which is why it is so important to understand the theory of the communication process. The more an individual understands the theory of the communication process the better he or she will be with at communicating effectively. Communication allows an individual to share information as well as to receive it from others. It is important that communication is understood properly to avoid confusion and misunderstandings. The message must be properly encoded as well as decoded. If the message is not understood correctly confusion and misunderstandings can occur.

In health care communication is extremely important. If proper communication is not maintained mistakes can be made that could result in a patient being injured or even killed. The health care provider must properly communicate with his or her patients, with his or her coworkers, as well as with many other individuals, there is no room for mistakes to be made. It is also important that the patient properly communicates with his or her health care provider(s) to inform them of what symptoms they may be feeling. There are so many reasons why it is important to understand the theory of the communication process.
