Culture of South Korea

MGMT 358: Culture and Gender Issues

Introduction

Culture is beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action with in a society. Cultural practices are passed through music, art, folklore stories, and games. A strong sense of culture has been preserved over the years in South Korea. The country has easily maintained its culture through religion, rituals, and secular celebrations. However, the South Korean culture also has a black mark. Some laws are overlooked due to the revenue that it generates. South Korean culture also caters to illegal prostitution.

Religion

Religious Belief:

South Korean constitution guarantees of freedom of religion to all its citizens. Having religious freedom means having the right to worship as many gods as one wants. In South Korea, a wide range of denominations stemming from Shamanism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and others are worshiped on a daily basis. The primary denominations present in the country are Shamanism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. (Rank, 2011)

Shaman religion

Shamanism is the belief in the existence of a myriad of god’s such as, mountain gods, house gods, fire god, and spirits of the dead. (Rank, 2011) The term Shamanism comes from the practice of using a Shaman as their guide in their religion. Shamans, who are mostly women, are usually recruited by people needing help in the spiritual world.

Korean Buddhism

Korean Buddhism is a doctrinal and meditative tradition. Korean Buddhism is different from the other forms of Buddhism because it resolves the inconsistencies in the Chinese Mahayana Buddhism. The way it was resolved was through remodeling a new holistic approach to Buddhism. Distinct variation of Buddhism resulted from this change and this approach is the trait of virtually all major Korean scholars. Korea was introduced to Buddhism around the fourth century.
