In the United States Army keeping subordinates properly informed is the most important aspect of being a leader. There are multiple ways communication has an direct effect between the leader and the subordinate. It takes moral courage to display proper communication to a subordinate, moral courage also expresses itself as candor.
Candor means being frank, honest, and sincere with others and requires steering clear of bias, prejudice, or malice even when it is uncomfortable or may seem better to keep quiet. One can observe candor when a squad leader calmly explains to the subordinate that he or she will be performing an special tasking that just came down from higher command. Likewise a candid subordinate could respectfully point out to the squad leader that he or she has just recently performed a special tasking the last time the squad was chosen for it. This relationships between leaders and subordinates builds trust and relies on candor. Competent leadership will get maximum results for the mission based on good communication. When the squad leader is given an assignment it is crucial for the information to be disseminated in a timely manner, the information must be passed quickly regardless of the mission. Either a mission as simple as conducting police call or an high risk mission patrolling the streets of Baghdad. Even though a mission of conducting police call if fairly simple informing your subordinates in an timely manner. Would allow them to prepare themselves and the squad leader to insure the subordinates have all necessary gear.
