Business Communication Trends

Modern business communication technology is advancing on a global scale. Old business communication practices involved writing letters, memos, and conducting face to face meetings. With the introduction and advancement of technologies like e-mail and video conferencing these practices are quickly becoming antiquated. Moreover, using these technologies businesses are going paperless and time zones are no longer considered boundaries in business.

One such modern advancement is e-mail. Even though e-mail technology has been around for several years, its use becomes more and more prolific as time passes. Today e-mails are replacing paper memos, meeting minutes, and many other official communications throughout business offices. E-mail may also be used in customer service. Many businesses use e-mail as a way to communicate with customers who may be having problems with products or need assistance with warranty issues. Of course e-mail does come with a price. Excessive use of email can lead to information overload and may actually cause some productivity to be lost. Time can easily be wasted on searching through e-mail trying to separate the important ones and responding to them. However, the pros of using e-mail far outweigh the cons.

Another communication tool used by businesses is telepresence or videoconferencing. This technology allows face to face meetings to be conducted across the globe any time of day. Sales managers of a large retail chain can hold meetings with employees across the nation sharing ideas and brainstorming solutions to problems. Telepresence can also be used to train employees, cutting costs of sending them to specialty schools that may be out of town. Interviewing prospective employees is another use for videoconferencing.
