Organizing

McDonald's Corporation is a Fortune 500 company that was ranked on the 106th position last year. McDonald’s is very successful company and its products (i.e. Chicken McNuggets®, Big Mac®) are recognized all over the world; also its logo, “the Golden Arches” and its brand name have become amongst the most instantly recognized symbols in the world (The Times 100, n.d.). One reason that it explains McDonald’s success is its organizational structure. More specifically, McDonald’s is structured to help its employees stay focused on customers. The organizing function of management “involves distributing the work among the employees in the work group and arranging the work so that it flows smoothly” (Rue, 2004, p. 6). The organization chart, differentiation, and integration are a few tools that allow gathering valuable information regarding an organization’s structure. Most companies have official organizational charts drawn to provide employees information regarding who report to whom and the several activities carried out by employees.

Differentiation refers to the job specialization and the division of labor that exists within an organization. Integration refers to “the degree to which differentiated work units work together and coordinate their efforts” (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 290). "In a survey by the American Management Association (AMA), 84 percent of executives polled said that they have at least one change initiative going on in their organizations" (Bohlander & Snell, 2007, p. 13). In today’s global and fast-changing markets, adaptation and survival are two must-dos for any organizations. They may have become more flexible, networked, and global; particularly using the Worldwide Web in order to share information and move faster than 20th century managers. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate McDonald’s organizational structure and how it relates to the following two organizational resources: technology and human resources.
