Conflict Resolution at General Hospital

Discuss the conflict that is occurring at General Hospital.

In today’s society, business organizations consist of a diversity of individuals that assemble themselves to accomplish the specific goals of the organization by performing the necessary task(s). Each individual have their own set of beliefs, morals, and values. There will be important differences of thoughts and opinions amongst the individuals and groups within the organizations. As a result, of the differences, conflict will develop and it is expected; however, it adequately addressing the issue is important so that the individuals or groups can come together in understanding and cooperation (Ache & Santos 2010). According to Hellriegel and Slocum (2010), conflict is the process in which one party (person or group) perceives that another party is opposing their interests (p.384). “Founded in 1968, General Hospital was in need of cutting costs and increasing revenue in order to compete against other medical facilities to stay in business” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 546). It was believed that physicians were the staff that needed to become more const conscientious however, previous approaches to control physician-driven cost had failed. Mr. Hammer, CEO of General Hospital, hired Mrs. Harding as COO (Chief Operating Officer) of General Hospital and suggested a course of action. He gave her sole authority to carry out the actions she deemed necessary and beneficial for the hospital. Mrs. Harding relied on her credentials in the medical office and the advice from her friend Mr. Colen. Mr. Colen helped Mrs. Harding make some cost effective changes at General Hospital.
