LAN Operating Systems Scenarios

Read the three scenarios below, then answer the questions that follow each scenario.

1. You are the network administrator for a new company that has 10 users and plans to add five more users within a year. The files need to be accessed by all 10 users and each user must have different security rights. What kind of network would you install and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define each component.

I think I would have one computer set up as the server (Windows Server or SQL Server). The workstations (clients) would connect to the server through a hub and router. I think that would give the easiest expansion possibilities. The server would hold all data and resources as well as assign individual user ID’s and passwords that would handle who is allowed to do and access what. I would also include 2 printers on this network – the server would default the printer with the least amount of traffic and the router would send the data to it.

2. You are the network administrator for a company that has a peer-to-peer network. How would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define all of the components of this type of network.

Since; in a peer-to-peer network, there is no server and all computers hold their own data and provide and request services as equals – I think I’d have them relate to each other through a secured wireless network that would allow limited access on the internet– meaning, if they’re online, they can only access certain content (i.e. client sites, vendor sites, etc. . .)

3. You are the administrator of a client-server environment. What kind of network would you install and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define each component of a typical client-server environment.

As in scenario 1 – the server would hold everything, and the client computers would access what is...
